Girls Basketball Team Earns Sportsmanship Award
The varsity girls basketball team was recently selected as a recipient of the Girls Top 100 Sportsmanship Award sponsored by the Michigan National Guard. The award, in its first year of existence, is based on sportsmanship of players, coaches, administrators, and fans as rated by game officials throughout the season. The top 100 girls' teams from across Michigan were honored this year. Congratulations, ladies!

Two Panthers Selected as Finalists for MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award
Ryan Hook and Ryan Watson, seniors at DKHS, have been selected as two of the 120 finalists for the prestigious MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award. The award, which drew over 1,600 applicants from across the state, recognizes student athletes who participate in multiple sports, excel in academics, and contribute to their school and community.
 
The award winners will be announced on February 7th. Our students are competing in the 'Class C Boys' competition. Of the 12 honorees left in this group, two are from D-K! We are one of only 20 schools from across the state to have multiple students selected as finalists.
 
Great job, guys!

Dempsey Earns 100th Career Victory
Tyler Dempsey, a senior on the wrestling team, picked up his 100th career victory on Saturday, January 14th at the Bangor Invitational. Tyler's milestone victory came in the championship match of the 130-pound weight class as he improved to 26-3 on the season.

Volleyball Team Earns Academic All-State Honors
The varsity volleyball team, state semifinalists and ranked #1 in the state for much of the season, was recently name to the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association's Team Academic All-State list. The Panther team members hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.62 during their high school careers.

Watson Earns Academic All-State in Boys Cross Country
Senior Ryan Watson has added another award to his already impressive resume. For the third consecutive year, Watson earned individual Academic All-State honors in cross country. Ryan finished eighth overall in the Division III Academic All-State rankings, which combines the student's grade point average with their finish at the state finals race.
Girls Cross Country Earns Academic All-State

The D-K girls cross country team recently added 'Academic All-State' to its list of accomplishments from this past season. Not only did the team win the conference and regional championships, their cumulative grade point average of 3.717 ranks 12th out of all teams that competed at the meet! This year's competitors at the Finals were: Jolene Drum, Christi Boze, Brianna Russell, Marcie Stevens, Sarah Rendon, Sami Willliams-Cleary, and Kelsey Sofia.


Varsity Volleyball Wraps Up Outstanding Season

The varsity volleyball team capped off an outstanding season over the weekend at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The Panthers fell in the state semifinals to #3 ranked Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.  This was D-K's second trip to the semifinals in the past three years. The team also won the second district and regional championships in school history and earned their fourth consecutive KVA title. Congratulations, girls!


Cross Country Competes at State Finals
Several members of the cross country teams completed their seasons on Saturday, November 5th at the MHSAA State Finals.
 
The girls team, coming off from a regional championship, finished in 21st place in the Division III race. Final results are as follows: Marceline Stevens - 111th Place, Brianna Russell 135th place, Christi Boze - 141st place, Jolene Drum - 157th place, Sami Williams-Cleary - 215th place, Sarah Rendon - 228th place, and Liz Jackson - 245th place.
 
Senior Ryan Watson, competing in his third state final meet, finished in 100th place with a time of 17:27.
 
Congratulations to all of our cross country team members on a great season!

Varsity Volleyball Wins District Title
The varsity volleyball team defeated KVA rival Schoolcraft (25-8, 25-22, 25-15) on Friday night to capture the MHSAA District Volleyball championship.
 
The Panthers, currently ranked #1 in Class C with a record of 44-10-1, advance to the Regional Semifinal against Bridgman on Tuesday, November 8th at Bangor High School.

Girls Cross Country Earns Regional Crown

The D-K girls cross country team continued their outstanding season by winning the MHSAA Regional Championship on Saturday, October 29th at Portage West Middle School. The Panthers topped second-place Parchment by eight points to win their first regional championship since 2002. The team advances to the MHSAA State Finals that will be held on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. Scoring for the girls team were:

 

Jolene Drum (4th place), Christi Boze (7th place), Brianna Russell (11th place), Marcie Stevens (12th place), Sarah Rendon (15th place), Sami Willliams-Cleary (33rd place), and Kelsey Sofia (61st place).

 

The boys cross country team finished in 4th place at the meet. Congratulations to Ryan Watson as he finished in 5th place and qualified for the MHSAA State Finals for the third straight year. Scoring for the boys team were:

 

Ryan Watson (5th place), Austin Ketola (15th place), Zach Haas (17th place), Billy Schut (35th place), Kannon Hoffman (39th place), Dylan Kelley (54th place), and Jacob Morgan (65th place).

 

Congratulations to all team member on a great season, and best of luck at the state finals!


Varsity Volleyball Wins Fourth Consecutive KVA Title
Congratulations to the varsity volleyball team for winning the KVA Tournament on Saturday, October 29th at Olivet. Delton defeated Pennfield (25-12, 25-4, 25-7) in the tournament finals to finish undefeated in the league this season. 
 
This is the fourth consecutive KVA championship for the D-K volleyball team, currently #1 in the Class C state rankings.  
Girls Cross Country Wins KVA Title
The girls cross country team entered the KVA Championship Meet having won all three league jamborees this season. The Panthers capped off the season by winning the league meet at Schoolcraft and bringing home the KVA championship.
 
Earning All-KVA honors were: Jolene Drum (6th place), Christi Boze (12th place), Brianna Russell (13th place), Marcie Stevens (14th place). Sarah Rendon (17th place) earned All-KVA Honorable Mention.
 
The D-K boys finished in second place at the championship meet and also finished second overall in the final KVA standings.
 
Earning All-KVA honors were: Ryan Watson (4th place), Zach Haas (8th place), Austin Ketola (9th place), and Billy Schut (12th place). Kannon Hoffman (16th place) earned All-KVA Honorable Mention.

KVA Launches Website

Our athletic conference, the Kalamazoo Valley Association, recently launched a website. It can be viewed at www.kvalley.org.

 

Our hope is that the site will provide useful information for parents, coaches, etc. and also help to publicize the great things that our kids and programs have accomplished.

Student Tickets at Reduced Rates

If you're interested in saving a bit of money and helping our school district at the same time, please remember that you can purchase student tickets for all KVA contests (home and away) in the high school office for a reduced rate of $3.00. The tickets normally cost $5.00.

 

Not only are you saving money, but we are able to keep the proceeds from tickets that we sell for away games. Think about it...save money and support our own programs at the same time!


Athletic Physicals Required for Participants

A current physical is required of any student athlete wishing to participate on a school-sponsored athletic team. In order for the physical to be valid for the 2011-12 school year, it must be dated on or after April 15th, 2011. The form must also be signed by the parent/guardian before it is considered to be valid.
