Saturday, March 27th was a busy day at Delton Kellogg High School as over twenty members of the coaching staff participated in the Coaches Advancement Program sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

The program is designed to, among other things, enhance coaching techniques, improve communication and organization, reinforce state guidelines, and increase the performance of each coach. The entire program consists of six training sessions. The most recent training, Level 4, covered topics including: Understanding Athlete Development, Preparing Athletes for Success, and Designing a Unified Strength and Conditioning Program. At the conclusion of the training, coaches completed a written exam to demonstrate their competence in the areas.

To date, over 80% of D-K coaches have participated in at least one level of the program. Numerous coaches have completed three or four levels, and four coaches have completed all six levels. The training is paid for with money raised through advertising sales in the game-day fall and winter athletic programs.

Rob Heethuis Inducted into D-K Athletic Hall of Fame
Rob Heethuis, retired teacher and coach at DKHS, was inducted into the D-K Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, January 22nd. Rob is our school's all-time winningest coach in both football and wrestling. He also coached track at D-K under fellow Hall of Famer Fred Pessell.

Coach Heethuis was twice selected as the MHSFCA Regional Coach of the Year and was the Associated Press Class B Coach of the Year in 1987. Rob was inducted into the MHSFCA Hall of Fame in 2003.

During his tenure as wrestling coach, Rob coached 35 athletes with over 100 individual career wins and five individual state champions. He recorded 14 league championships and five district titles. Heethuis was twice named Regional Coach of the Year and was the Class B Coach of the Year in 1985. He recorded over 500 career varsity victories before returning at the end of the 2009 season.

Congratulations, Coach Heethuis! A complete list of DKHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductees is available here.

Boys Cross Country Earns Academic All-State

The D-K boys cross country team recently added 'Academic All-State' to its list of accomplishments from this past season. Not only did the team qualify for the MHSAA State Finals, their cumulative grade point average of 3.709 ranks seventh out of all teams that competed at the meet. This year's competitors at the Finals were Ryan Watson, Brandon Humphreys, Nick Rendon, Tyler Bourdo, Kannon Hoffman, Mike Bassett, and Zac Haas.

On top of the team honors, sophomore Ryan Watson earned individual Academic All-State honors. By combining his 4.0 grade point average with his finish at the meet, Ryan ranked seventh out of the entire field of competitors. Not bad for his first year ever participating in cross country!

Varsity Volleyball Wraps Up Record-Setting Season

The varsity volleyball team capped off an outstanding season over the weekend at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. In Friday night's semifinal match against #8 ranked Livonia Ladywood. The Panthers rolled past Ladywood in a quick three-set victory (25-10, 25-17, 25-18).

Making the first state finals appearance in school history, Delton faced #1 ranked North Branch on Saturday afternoon. Our Panthers fought for three sets (25-19, 30-28, 25-23), but eventually fell in the state championship match.

No matter the result of the final match, our team had the best season in school history. Aside from the success on the court, they also carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 in the classroom and brought what appeared to be the entire Delton community together during the state tournament run.

If you missed the final two matches or just want to see them again, they are available online at www.mhsaa.tv

KVA Launches Website

Our athletic conference, the Kalamazoo Valley Association, recently launched a website. It can be viewed at www.kvalley.org.

Our hope is that the site will provide useful information for parents, coaches, etc. and also help to publicize the great things that our kids and programs have accomplished.

Please note that the site is a work in progress. If you have suggestions or comments, please email bfarkas@dkschools.org.

Panther Teams Win Sportsmanship Awards

Three D-K spring athletic teams were recently honored with the KVA Sportsmanship Award. The teams selected were the varsity baseball team, varsity boys golf team, and girls track and field team. The award, voted on by coaches, is only given to one team in the KVA per sport each year.

With the three spring selections, D-K has now won the KVA Sportsmanship Award four times (boys basketball is the fourth) during the 2008-09 school year. The four selections are the most by any school in the KVA this year!

Keep up the good work, Panthers!

Delton Kellogg Athletes Earn All-State Honors

Hannah Williams, a junior, finished in 3rd place and earned All-State honors in the 300-Meter Hurdles at the MHSAA Track Finals on Saturday at Comstock Park High School.

Even more impressive, Hannah's grade point average of 3.839 combined with her 3rd place finish, qualifies her for Academic All-State! Congratulations, Hannah!

Katie Searles, a junior, finished in 4th place in the 300 Meter Hurdles at Saturday's MHSAA Track and Field Finals. With her finish, Katie earned 2nd Team All-State. While the accomplishment itself is something to be proud of, Saturday was only the fifth time that Katie had participated in the event this year! She also beat her personal best time by 1.4 seconds and finished .03 seconds from earning 1st Team All-State. Great job, Katie!

Also, congratulations to Matt Ingle, Kelsey Sofia, Renee McConahay, Mandy Dye, Jolene Drum, and Andrea Polley for qualifying for the MHSAA Finals.
