Our next area of study will focus on electricity. Students will be starting with charges of particles and static electricity, moving into circuits, and analyzing home use.

Text Box: Using Graphic Organizers to Synthesize Reading
Text Box: We will be implementing some study skills weekly in an effort to help students better prepare not only for tests, but class as well.
We are starting out today by organizing our folders or three ring binders. It sounds silly to most adults, but student s can always use a helping hand in organization. We will be putting our folders unit order organized by outcomes, participation rubrics, readings and notes, assignments, laboratory, and assessments. Then, students can easily find information when looking for it. This will not only help them locate homework, but they will know where to find their study materials when they get home.
Speaking of home, we will also be taking about our at home study environment. It is important that when students sit down to study they are doing it in the right environment. Students need a quiet area. (Even if they insist that they can work with the T.V. on or the Text Box: radio blaring.) They should also be at a table or desk. Sitting on the bed is not ideal because it is too comfortable. Students also need the right materials. (Flash cards, notes, review sheets.) Going over these items a little every night (20 minutes) will better prepare them than cramming the night before a test. Doing practice problems in their books with provided answers also helps. Students could also try to explain a problem in science to their parent. This forces a student to justify why they are doing a problem a certain way. I also tell students not to be afraid to work on problems in a group. It may help them get beyond being stuck. Working on a problem in a group however is not the same as copying homework. Tell your child to keep that in mind.
Lastly, we will be using a graphic organizer to synthesize information that we have read in an effort to help our brains see Text Box: I am hopeful that students can use these strategies elsewhere to improve their performance in other classes. They will have one on Wednesday that they can study from.
Text Box: Students will be filling out graphic organizers to help them organizer their thoughts on what they have read. Therefore, you may see your child read a small article or passage and fill out a sheet on one topic covered in the article. This is another strategy that we are using to help students understand what they have read.
